*This was the Adult Only Junior Suite Select at the time of filming. Now is the Family Friendly Junior Suite.
Sandos Playacar Beach Resort is a family friendly resort with an adult only section. There is a new, oceanfront, adult only section with adult only pool, Select Club breakfast and two bars.
While the adult only section is nice, if you want to venture outside of this area (which you will for the common areas, nightly entertainment and more restaurant options), you’re going to see kids. If you don’t mind this – great. If you do mind this, you are going to want to look elsewhere.
Sandos is an extremely long property and therefore, we relied heavily on the shuttles to get us around the resort. The wait times were only an issue on a couple of occasions.
The staff was incredibly friendly and guests here were having a great time. Now, admittedly, our perspective is a bit different because we are continuously staying at and conducting resort inspections in Mexico and throughout the Caribbean. This resort is rated as a 4 star and I would give it more of a 3-3.5 star rating. There were too many things that was just off for a 4 star rating. Stains on furniture, mold on curtains, an odd smell in the suite. Although we reported these things (because let’s face it, if nobody speaks up, maybe they are not aware). We pointed this out to the manager of housekeeping who agreed with the mold and what we did point out and we thought “wow – they are going to address this right away!” Not so much. 🙁
Anyway, I can say, if you are going to stay in the new Palm Bay area of the resort… this will not be an issue for you. I can also say this was probably one of the more spacious suites we have been in for awhile but it is very basic. It’s not opulent or luxurious. If you place more value on the destination than your suite, this could work for you. If you are a first timer… this could work for you (remember, everyone else we came across was having a fabulous time).
I do like the proximity to 5th Avenue in Playa del Carmen. You are able to rent bikes to ride there (or it’s about 5 minute taxi ride). You can also get a day pass to the sister resort, Sandos Caracol.
Moral of the story – your expectations must align with what you are actually getting here. If you go in with grand expectations, you will be disappointed. If you go in ready to roll with whatever may come up or if you don’t have another point of comparison, this may work for you.
