But our new ship comes with an accompanying challenge, with more bars, pubs and nightclubs than we have ever had onboard before. Offering a range that plays to the adventurous whilst offering familiar creature comforts is always key to our guests experience, especially in the beverage area.
From Vineyard to Ship, P&O Cruises will be bringing the ultimate experience for our wine lovers. Our Director of Food and Beverage Operations, Simon Blacoe recently visited our suppliers in the Hunter Valley to talk about our next venture together, Pacific Adventure.
Pacific Adventure will have a wine list that is focused almost solely on Australian and New Zealand wines. Australia alone has close to 2,500 wineries and for some time now, has been on the world stage particularly in the Hunter, Yarra and Barossa Valleys along with Mornington Peninsular and Margaret River. Also with New Zealand, it’s guaranteed if you’re a Sauvignon Blanc fan, you will have tried Marlborough before, not to mention Waipara, Hawke’s Bay and Central Otago, all of whom are also playing on the world stage.
Having such great quality on our doorstep, and by that we mean, the ports across Australia and New Zealand that our ships call home, it’s a great adventure to work with the wineries, their winemakers and viticulturists to see the passion that goes into every bottle.
Duane Roy proud of a new state of the art winery, all Glandore Estate wines are handpicked from some of the Hunter’s most distinguished ‘old vine’ vineyards. With the recent introduction of exciting new varieties including Tempranillo, Sangiovese, Nebbiolo, Pinot Grigio and an exciting new Sparkling Shiraz, they’re keen to produce contemporary wine styles designed to meet and satisfy the emerging tastes of the modern consumer.
Tyrrells’ have been producing wine for far longer than we’ve been cruising in Australia. A member of Australia’s First Families of Wine, led by fourth generation winemaker, Bruce, and home to some of Australia’s most awarded wines. On top of this, since 2009, they have focused a great deal on maintaining standards of excellence to minimise environmental impact. We have worked closely with Tyrrells to bring Winemaker dinners to life on our ships, which provides our guests the opportunity to learn more about the wines.
Having just past it’s 150th anniversary, Audrey Wilkinson has been a leading, innovating winery bringing about leading edge technology for fermenters and crushers. Xanthe, the winemaker, carries on this tradition in seeking other innovations within the world of wine.
So how is Pacific Adventure going to be different? In so many ways! Yes, you can still get the glass of wine or cocktail by the pool or at dinner, but the look and feel of the venues themselves, the quality of the wines and cocktails, the range on offer and the interactive experiences to learn more – to take the Adventure – will be available on board.
